Bohua Chinese Language and Cultural School
for Students from All Cultures
Bohua Chinese School warmly welcomes students of families from the many Chinese-speaking countries around the world. We offer traditional Chinese instruction as well as a special study track for students whose families do not speak Mandarin at home. Our Chinese as a Second Language (CSL) classes are designed specifically to suit the learning needs of students from non-Mandarin speaking households.
Bohua's founders established our school with the wish that it be a place for children and their families to completely enjoy the experience of engaging with Chinese language and cultural study, and every successive generation of administrators and parents does the best we can to honor this mission.
Bohua is cooperatively managed by parents and active volunteers whose children are school graduates, so there are plenty of opportunities for parents to get involved with programming, planning, community outreach and to even lear Chinese themselves! We are also helped by volunteers from alumnae families - parents of students who have already graduated.
Our native Mandarin speaking instructors teach traditional Chinese characters with the aid of both bopomofo and pinyin phonetic systems. Class sizes are small, so plenty of one-on-one attention is given. Our students assimilate Chinese culture and language through storytelling, rhyming games, songs, arts and crafts to supplement what they learn in traditional reading and writing lessons. We hold speech contests twice a year and in preparation for our annual Chinese New Year celebration, all classes share several sessions together to learn about this important holiday and to create a special show which they perform at the celebration.
